China’s advancements in space warfare have reportedly led to the development of a new Kill Mesh system, raising some concerns. During the 16th annual McAleese Defense Programs Conference in Virginia, General Michael Guetlein, Vice Chief of Space Operations for the US Space Force, highlighted this during the event. He reportedly revealed that the gap in space capabilities between the US and its adversaries has narrowed significantly. This has made it necessary to make necessary action towards space defense strategies. He further added that there needs to be a shift from providing space services to an active protection against hostile actions.
China and Russia Intensify Orbital Military Activities
According to multiple reports online, reportsChina and Russia have been strengthening their space warfare capabilities. As per reports, Russia’s anti-satellite (ASAT) test in 2022 resulted in a debris field in low-Earth orbit. Moreover, in the same year, a Chinese satellite was observed maneuvering another defunct satellite into a graveyard orbit. Guetlein reported revealed that the adversaries have moved beyond passive space operations and are now engaged in satellite grappling, electronic warfare, and close-proximity tracking of US spacecraft.
He further highlighted that the satellites are capable of jamming, spoofing, and dazzling, which might create space conflict in the near future between both the countries. He also reportedly revealed that the recent events where foreign satellites shadowing US spacecraft are creating a cat and mouse scenario for Space Force.
Strategic Response and Future Measures
The report highlights that the Space Force is reinforcing its infrastructure and increasing redundancies to counter growing these threats. He added that they have introduced a new initiative, known as Golden Dome, to integrate defense technologies that previously operated separately.
